Do All Puppies Have Blue Eyes

This is the time to enjoy the blue eyed stage where their eyes are blue and wholly uniform in color meaning there is no change from the irises to the pupils.

Do all puppies have blue eyes. Puppies eyes are closed for the first 8 to 14 days of their lives. However if your puppy is younger than 10 weeks of age chances are that his eye color will change. All puppies are born with blue eyes. And like the other breeds blue eyes occur in shelties along with the merle gene.

Their eyes only begin to reveal themselves and slowly open after that point. That can take a while but for most dogs the eyes will darken. But that s not a guarantee. After 10 or more weeks as melanin increases in their systems the eyes will darken.

The shades of the blue can vary from the pure blue to blue with flecks of grey and green. Some appear to be a little more green blue while others will have blue with spots of brown. Puppies can be born with pure blue eyes or bluish eyes that have flecks of grey green or brown in them. All young puppies are born with varying shades of blue eyes.

And while most puppies will have their eye color changed over time some dogs retain their blue eyes. Puppy s eyes start out lighter in color because the iris lacks melanin. While some puppies will retain their blue eyes throughout their lifetime other puppies will experience a change in eye color. Before this occurs they will lack the same range of vision as an adult dog and will occasionally bump into or stumble over items around the home.

Adult dogs can have blue green hazel or brown eyes. Almost all puppies once they open their eyes will have a bluish blurry color. After puppies have opened their eyes they will be blue in color. Their eyes change with age.

Brown is the default eye color for mature dogs. Some puppies eyes are bluer than others and some can even have a slightly grayish appearance at least at first. Given the breeds on this list it seems that herding dogs have a tendency toward blue eyes. After all the shetland sheepdog is the fifth herding breed on this list.

As they grow up the dogs eyes turn either amber or a gray blue color. It takes several weeks for their eyesight to fully mature and become sharp and then the color to change. They can even change their eye color as late as 4 to 5 weeks old. So if they are dappled they are more likely to have lighter eyes.

Nothing of course is. After the 5 week mark that s probably their permanent eye color but i have heard of huskies changing eye color even later. Within about 10 12 weeks your puppies eyes will mature and begin to turn to their new permanent color. As puppies weimaraners have light blue eyes but they don t stay that way for long.

Believe it or not but all puppies are born blue eyed.
